Install and use Polyglot Subs
Polyglot Subs works on Windows PCs, Android phones and tablets, Fire TV, and TVs with Google TV or Android TV. Pick your device to jump to its steps.

Samsung or LG TV? They don't run Android apps. Plug in a Fire TV Stick, or a Google TV Streamer or Chromecast with Google TV.
Before you start
For everyone, on any device.
- Create your account at app.polyglotsubs.com (free trial). On your account page, add Polyglot Subs to Stremio.
- Languages: Japanese, Spanish or German, each with English. For anime, Japanese can also be paired with Spanish or German.
Windows
- Install Polyglot Subs from the Microsoft Store and sign in.
- Play an episode in Stremio. The two-language lines appear over the video.
The Windows app works with Stremio 5 for Windows, free from stremio.com/downloads.
Using it
- Click any word
- See its meaning.
- ⚙
- Display settings: languages and their order, furigana, romaji, karaoke, sizes.
- ⚑
- Report a problem.
Phone & tablet (Android)
- Install the app. Get it from Google Play. You can also download it directly: app.polyglotsubs.com/android.apk. It's coming soon to Google Play. Until then, download it here: app.polyglotsubs.com/android.apk. If the phone asks, allow installing apps from your browser.
- Open Polyglot Subs and sign in with your email. You get a 6-digit code, no password.
- In Stremio, go to Settings → Advanced → Default Player → External.
- Play anything and choose Polyglot Subs player (tap Always).
Using it
- Tap a word
- Pause and see its meaning. Tap elsewhere to play on.
- Double-tap anywhere
- Pause or play. Double-tap the far left or right edge to go 10 seconds back or forward.
- Slide sideways
- Move through the video. The picture follows your finger, and it shows where you'll land.
- Slide up or down
- On the left half for brightness, on the right half for volume.
- Tap the picture
- Shows the buttons: 🔒 lock the screen, ⧉ small window, ⚑ report a problem, ? help, Aa display settings.
Fire TV
- Install the app.
Get it from the Amazon Appstore. Or install it with Downloader:

- Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About and click your device's name 7 times. Developer options appears.
- Search for and install the free Downloader app.
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options → Install unknown apps and turn on Downloader.
- Open Downloader, type

- Open Polyglot Subs. It shows a code and a QR code. On your phone or computer, open app.polyglotsubs.com/tv (or scan the QR code) and type the code.
- In Stremio on the TV, open Settings and turn on Always start video in external player (on older versions: Play in external player). Then play anything and choose Polyglot Subs.

Google TV & Android TV
Including Sony, TCL, Philips and Hisense TVs.
- Install the app.

- From Google Play on the TV, install the free Downloader app.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources and turn it on for Downloader.
- Open Downloader, type

- Open Polyglot Subs. It shows a code and a QR code. On your phone or computer, open app.polyglotsubs.com/tv (or scan the QR code) and type the code.
- In Stremio on the TV, open Settings and turn on Always start video in external player (on older versions: Play in external player). Then play anything and choose Polyglot Subs.
Using it

Using it on a TV
On Fire TV, Google TV and Android TV, with the remote:
- OK
- Pause or play.
- Left Right
- 10 seconds back or forward. Press again to go further.
- Up
- Pause and open the meaning of the word being said. With a word open, left and right move to the word before or after (into the lines around it). Any other button plays on.
- Down
- The timeline and the player's buttons. Back hides them.
- Menu
- The display settings, and “Report a problem with this moment”.
Questions
Which devices?
Windows PCs, Android phones and tablets, Fire TV, and TVs or sticks with Google TV or Android TV. Samsung or LG TV: use a Fire TV Stick or a Google TV stick.
Which languages?
Japanese, Spanish or German, each with English. For anime, Japanese with Spanish or German too.
The video is dubbed (for example, English audio with Japanese lines)?
The lines still show. Karaoke (words lighting up as they're said) turns off, since the voices aren't the lines' words.
It says “No lines for this video”?
Some episodes don't have subtitles in that language yet. Report it from the app and we'll look.
A stream won't play?
Pick another stream in Stremio. Ones marked x264, H.264 or AVC play everywhere.
